Essay # 6 Rough Draft
I was thinking, instead of copying and pasting my whole essay on male/ female ideals, i thought it would be a better idea if I add a couple of very important facts to my essay. I thought that my last essay was very opinionated and I didnt feel that I gave too many facts. For my essay 6 I'm still going to be talking about male/female ideals but I am going to add more facts which i have read in several articles that I've read in the past couple of weeks. I will be adding the following facts into my essay in order to make it stronger and less opinionated.
In the "male ideal evolves from woodstock scrawny to mtv brawny", by Guy Trebay. They talk about several facts that really caught my attention such as, " actual models chosen for Men's Health covers are members not only of a self-selecting minority, but of one that's 'super genetically gifted'. Few men are able to achieve a tiny waist, a washboard stomach and a massive torso." This means very few people are able to reach this so called ideal body. Teenagers around the world look up to these few individuals wanting to look like them without knowing that it's genetically impossible to reach this ideal body. the media portrays this models as the ideal person that everyone wants to become.
All of these few models are being idolized by not only teenagers but by adults as well. This is a very bad thing because they start teaching their kids that being fat is wrong and that you have to look like the person on tv. In the same article, Trebay talks about how "American men underwent 54,106 liposuction,... also surgery to augment their pectoral muscles, their buttocks, their calves and even their penises... 40% of American boys 12 and older report that they have experimented anabolic steroids." All these statistics really give you something to think about. This shows how much the media matters to the American population and how much power it has over us.
In the US Weekly magazine there was an article, "Too thin for TV" by Mara Reinstein. she mainly talks about how much pressure the girls from the show 90210 are bieng put under. Shenae Grimes, one of the girls on this show was 120lbs and went down to 90lbs from 2004 to 2008. "they want to be the next hott thing so they think they have to be a size 0 or 2" This is a very scary thought because being 90lbs is not healthy at all. This celebrities believe that by fitting into the size 0 or size 2 dresses they are going to be the next hott thing. The worst part is that they are pretty much telling the girls around the world that in order to be considered "hott", you need to be a size 0 or 2. "Grimes has been spotted smoking cigarettes, a known appetite suppressant... she's always looking looking around and seeing what everyone is doing and wearing. she didnt seem comfortable in her own skin." This shows that even celebrities dont feel comfortable the way they are. It's not a healthy behavior and it seems to be catching up to them.
So is this idolitary and obsession to become that male/female ideal worth it?
